Do you ever think that your intellectual energy should be put to better use?

None of us will never make money with chess.

Is this some sort of "smartness indicator" that drives us to get better at chess wasting days and weeks and even months with nothing to prove to anybody, except our self ego..
If you don't have the potential or capacity or "intellectual energy" to earn money from chess, it doesn't mean others can't.
Chess is fun, I think being able to do things we enjoy is an important thing as far as quality of life goes. In any case it's probably better than watching TV or playing video games, even if you never make a penny from it. Most of my best friends I've met at chess tournaments, so it feels like it's been a worthwhile time investment for me- even aside from the fact I've made money doing it.
You consider you smart for playing chess? HAHAHAHAHA.

I wont be Mr. Universe, but i exercise regularly.
I wont be picasso, but i like to paint here and there.
I wont be the next satriani, but i enjoy playing the guitar.
I wont be an historian, but i like to read about it here and there.

That sentence applies to everything in life, so why should i do everything i do if i wont get the money, fame or recognition for it?
Read the first sentence again.
You see life ain't always about getting a job, and do everything for the only purpose of money, chess is fun to some people, and therefore those people will play it, they might not be able to make a career out of it, they might not even want to make a career out of it, and that is fine, it's just a game.

If life was only about making money, we may as well say that people shouldn't play instruments or make art for fun because they won't make money out of it, or we can say that people shouldn't have side-hobbies because they won't be making careers out of them.
it's a complex question. At the very least in principle you should be working to get better. That's at any age and level
WHOA!! If NONE of us will NEVER make money from chess, when does my check arrive?
I've made 15 dollars on chess, and look at my rating. you can make money on just about anything, if you're good enough.
i don't put any energy into chess. I play for fun, I rarely calculate, I just make moves that feel right. I could play minecraft or whatever to unwind, I chose chess.

Even top grandmasters who study long and hard play chess for fun (often bullet or blitz) with their mates when they have some spare time. When you play for fun you aren't using energy, you're relaxing and gaining energy.
